Hello foxys! The summer is coming and I think it is time to make a hat to protect us from the sun! I’ve made a bucket hat out of old jeans and it turned out pretty cool. Let’s get started!

What you’ll need is:

  • a pair of old jeans
  • jeans thread
  • scissor
  • ruler
  • pins
  • sewing machine

Making off

For this project I have done a one size fits all, but have made it slightly larger so that it fits everyone. If you find that it is too big, you can do one or two small darts in the band to make it smaller.

Step 1:

Trace a 18 cm diameter circle. You should have two circles.

Step 2

Create the sides. Take a piece of paper and cut out a rectangle measuring 9cm x 32cm. Mark the paper along the long side at 10cm and at 20cm and pinch together 1cm on either side of the mark. Cut out four pieces.

Step 3

For the brim of the hat you have to fold your fabric in half again so that you have 4 layers stacked. We’re using the fold to help create a symmetrical semicircle. From the corner of measure and mark first 9cm and 20cm. Continue to pivot the measuring tape in a curve so that you draw out two quarter circles. Cut along the lines.

These are all the pieces. Now let’s get sewing

Step 4

Sew the short edges of the sides and the short edges of the brim of the hat

Step 5

Take one of the side and one of the circle and pin it together. Open the side panels to form a circle, and pin the top piece along the inside. Make sure that you are pinning this to the inside edge of the side panel with the smaller diameter. Sew together and repeat for your other side piece & top.

Step 6

Similar to the step above, take one outer brim piece at a time and pin the top of the hat to the inside edge. Sew these edges together and repeat for the other top and brim pieces.

Step 7

Flip one of the hat pieces the right way out, and the other the wrong way out. Put one inside the other so that you end up with the neat sides facing out on both pieces. Match the edges of the brim and pin around this outside edge. Sew 1cm in from the edge around the whole perimeter

Step 8

Sew around the bottom edge of the sides panels.

And voila
